5 Signs Your Shopify Store Is Losing Sales to Speed

Most store owners assume their site is "fast enough" until they actually measure it. Here are five signs it isn't.
1. Your product images take more than 2 seconds to appear
Run your store through Google PageSpeed Insights. If your Largest Contentful Paint (the biggest image or block of text on the page) is over 2.5 seconds, visitors are staring at a blank screen before they see your product.
2. Your mobile score is under 50
Most of your traffic is mobile. If your mobile PageSpeed score is under 50, you're not just slow — you're likely losing a meaningful share of visitors before the page even finishes loading.
3. You've added more than 10 apps
Every app adds its own JavaScript to your storefront. Ten or more apps is a common tipping point where load time starts climbing noticeably, especially if a few of them weren't uninstalled properly and left orphaned code behind.
4. Your theme hasn't been updated in over a year
Shopify and theme developers regularly ship performance improvements. An old theme is often carrying years of accumulated inefficiency that a current one has already fixed.
5. You don't actually know your Core Web Vitals
If you can't answer "what's my LCP, CLS, and INP right now" — that's the real sign. You can't fix what you're not measuring.
The fix isn't always a full rebuild. Most stores gain the most from image optimisation, removing unused apps, and cleaning up render-blocking scripts — work that usually takes days, not months.
